Portrush, County Antrim — Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) have launched an attempted murder investigation after a house in the Craigahullier area of Portrush was targeted in a late-night shooting on Thursday, leaving residents shaken but fortunately uninjured.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:25 p.m. BST on Thursday, July 9, 2026, when multiple gunshots were fired at a residential property. Police say the attack is being treated as a targeted incident, and investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Gunfire Strikes Home While Occupants Are Inside
According to Detective Inspector Connolly, several shots were fired at two bedroom windows and the front door of the home. Two people were inside the property when the shooting occurred but escaped without physical injuries.
Authorities have not released the identities of the occupants or disclosed any potential motive behind the attack. The investigation remains in its early stages as detectives continue gathering evidence.
Burnt-Out Vehicle May Be Connected
As part of the investigation, police are examining a burnt-out vehicle discovered during the early hours of Friday in a forested area off Conogher Road in Ballymoney.
Investigators believe the vehicle may be linked to the shooting and are working to determine whether it was used by those responsible before being abandoned and set on fire. Forensic examinations are ongoing as detectives seek to establish a timeline of events.
PSNI Appeals for Witnesses
The PSNI has issued a public appeal for information and is asking anyone who was in the Craigahullier area of Portrush on Thursday night to come forward.
Detectives are especially interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen either of the following vehicles:
- A Volkswagen Passat
- A Volkswagen Jetta
Police are also requesting dashcam footage, doorbell camera recordings, or any other video that may assist in identifying those involved or tracing the movements of the vehicles before and after the incident.

The shooting has caused concern among residents in Portrush, a popular coastal town known for attracting visitors throughout the year. In response, the PSNI has increased patrols in the area to reassure the public while detectives continue their inquiries.
