A fast-moving wildfire near Smartsville in Nevada County, California, prompted a major emergency response Tuesday afternoon after flames spread rapidly through dry vegetation, threatening nearby homes, power infrastructure, and Highway 20.
The wildfire, officially named the Kearney Fire, ignited near Kearney Court, just south of Highway 20 between Smartsville and Penn Valley. Firefighters from CAL FIRE and multiple local agencies responded with ground crews, air tankers, helicopters, and bulldozers after the blaze was reported to be spreading at a dangerous rate.
Rapid Fire Growth Triggers Evacuations
As the wildfire intensified, officials issued mandatory evacuation orders for several neighborhoods south of Highway 20 while additional surrounding communities were placed under evacuation warnings. Authorities also implemented temporary road closures as firefighting resources moved into the area, and aircraft carried out repeated water and fire retardant drops to slow the fire’s advance.
Emergency responders reported that multiple structures were initially threatened, prompting firefighters to focus on protecting homes while preventing the flames from spreading further into residential areas. Utility crews also monitored nearby power infrastructure as the fire moved through the area, with some localized power outages reported during the incident.
Firefighters Halt Forward Progress
