The Beach City, Ohio, community is mourning the loss of Gaylord Y. Barkman, a respected Mennonite pastor, missionary, husband, father, grandfather, and mentor whose unwavering Christian faith and lifelong dedication to serving others touched countless lives. Barkman died on Monday, July 13, 2026, at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus after suffering respiratory failure. He was 61 years old.
Surrounded by his wife and children during his final moments, Gaylord’s passing marks the end of a remarkable life devoted to ministry, family, and compassionate service. His influence reached far beyond the pulpit, leaving an enduring legacy within his church, local community, and overseas mission work.
A Life Rooted in Faith
Born on March 28, 1965, Gaylord was the son of the late Raymond J. Barkman and Clara (Mullet) Barkman. From an early age, his life reflected a deep commitment to Christian values, eventually leading him into pastoral ministry where he became known for his thoughtful leadership, humility, and genuine concern for others.
In 1992, he married Celesta (Kauffman) Barkman, beginning a partnership built on faith and shared purpose. Together they spent 34 years raising their family while serving churches and communities wherever they felt called.
Those closest to Gaylord describe him as a gentle listener, wise counselor, and faithful servant whose greatest joy came from helping others strengthen their relationship with Christ.
Decades of Ministry and Mission Work
Gaylord faithfully served as a minister at Christian Life Mennonite Church in Beach City beginning in 2001, where he became a trusted spiritual leader for generations of families.
His ministry also extended internationally through missionary work in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where he served for six years as an IGo pastor. During that time, he worked alongside local believers, shared the Gospel, and helped build relationships that continued long after his return to Ohio.
Even after returning home, Gaylord remained committed to encouraging others. He later joined Ferra Manufacturing in a sales role, where friends and colleagues said his greatest strength was never selling products but building meaningful relationships with people.
A Devoted Family Man
Above every title he carried, Gaylord treasured being a husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Celesta Barkman, and their six children:
