Stratford, Connecticut — Two people were hospitalized after a second-alarm house fire broke out Monday afternoon on West Reitter Street in Stratford, prompting a large emergency response from the Stratford Fire Department and neighboring agencies.
According to fire officials, the Stratford Emergency Communications Center received multiple 911 calls at approximately 2:37 p.m. reporting heavy black smoke rising from a residence in the 300 block of West Reitter Street. Firefighters arrived within minutes to find intense smoke and flames engulfing the second floor of the home.
Second Alarm Declared as Fire Intensifies
Due to the volume of fire encountered upon arrival, incident commanders quickly upgraded the response to a second alarm, bringing additional Stratford fire companies to assist with suppression efforts.
Firefighters established a water supply and launched an aggressive interior attack to contain the blaze before it could spread further through the structure. Their rapid response helped bring the fire under control while preventing additional injuries.
Residents Escape Before Crews Arrive
Deputy Fire Chief Eric Heath said rescue teams searched the home after entering but confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated before firefighters reached the scene.
Two civilians who had been inside the residence were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment after suffering smoke inhalation. Officials reported that no firefighters were injured during the operation.
